What are Energy Saving Certificates?

Energy Saving Certificates (Certificados de Ahorro Energético, CAE) are electronic documents that certify a final energy saving achieved through an energy efficiency measure. Each CAE is equivalent to 1 kWh of final energy saved.

The scheme is governed by Royal Decree 36/2023 of 24 January (Real Decreto 36/2023, de 24 de enero). Electricity and gas suppliers and operators of petroleum products and liquefied petroleum gases, known as obligated parties, can meet part of their energy saving obligations by acquiring CAE instead of contributing to the National Energy Efficiency Fund (Fondo Nacional de Eficiencia Energética).

That is why your savings have an economic value: when you replace equipment, improve a process or reduce a building’s consumption, those savings can be converted into CAE and sold. At CAMYnergía, we take care of the whole process so that you can simply focus on your business.

Who is involved in a CAE?

  1. The owner of the savingsYour business: it carries out the efficiency measure and transfers the resulting savings under a CAE agreement (convenio CAE), in return for a financial consideration.
  2. The accredited verifierAn independent body checks that the savings are real and correctly calculated.
  3. The authoritiesThe regional authority (gestor autonómico) approves the application and issues the CAE, which are entered in the National Registry.
  4. The obligated or delegated partyIt acquires the savings and settles the CAE to meet its energy saving obligations.

    While the work is carried out, we gather the evidence and prepare the complete application.

    Verification and payment

    An accredited verifier checks the savings, the CAE are issued and you receive the agreed amount.

Who can obtain Energy Saving Certificates?

Any business or organisation that carries out an energy efficiency measure at its premises: farms, cooperatives, shops, hotels, offices, healthcare facilities, industrial companies, residents’ associations or public authorities.

How much does the preliminary study cost?

Nothing. The preliminary study is free and without obligation: we analyse your case and tell you whether it can be monetised and how much it could be worth.

Which measures can be monetised?

Those included in the Ministry’s catalogue of standardised energy efficiency measures, as well as bespoke projects whose savings are measured and justified individually. We will tell you what fits your case.

Do I need to contact you before the work is done?

That is our recommendation. Some documents and conditions should be prepared before and during the work so that the savings can be certified. If your project is already finished, get in touch anyway and we will look into your case.

How long does the process take?

It depends on the type of measure and the autonomous community. Our proposal includes an indicative timetable, and we keep you informed at every step.
